The Military of the Future is Trans-Inclusive

PRIDE: CHAMPIONING LGBTQIA+ LEADERS & ALLIES

On January 26, 2021, trans people were permitted to join the US military. 2021, not 1921! Trans military exclusion has a long and heartbreaking history. This is where SPARTA comes in, a trans military advocacy non profit organization. Here to talk about SPARTA’s work and how you can get involved are SPARTA President Bree Fram, a USSF Lt Col and Astronautical Engineer, Nadine Alonzo, Active Duty Major, US Army, Active Duty US Army Servicemember Alleria Stanley, and Master Sergeant Nick Wright, Recruiting and Retention NCO at Ohio Army National Guard.

Bree Fram

Bridget Finkeldey

Bree Fram (she/her) is an active duty lieutenant colonel and astronautical engineer in the United States Space Force. She is also the President of SPARTA, a non-profit that advocates and educates about transgender military service and is dedicated to the support and professional development of over 1500 transgender service members. Bree is also a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Diversity Working group and develops programming to increase diverse representation in STEM and aerospace.

Bree is assigned to the Pentagon to lead space acquisition policy development for the Department of the Air Force. Prior to recommissioning into the Space Force in 2021, she served 18 years in a variety of Air Force positions including a Research and Development command position and an oversight role for all Air Force security cooperation activity with Iraq, and deployed to Qatar and Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Bree came out publicly on the day the transgender ban in the military was dropped in 2016. She served through the re-imposition of a transgender military ban from 2019-2021. She is currently one of the highest ranking out transgender officers in the United States military.

Bree has appeared on ABC and NBC Nightly news, PBS News Hour, NPR’s All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and 1A. She’s a featured speaker on leadership, diversity and inclusion at Fortune 500 corporations, universities, and government organizations. Bree is a member of the State Department’s US Speaker program which connects foreign audiences with American experts on topics of strategic importance to the United States.

Bree is the co-editor of the book With Honor and Integrity: Transgender Troops in Their Own Words from NYU press.

Bree has been married for 17 years to Peg Fram and they have two girls, aged 13 and 9.

Nadine Alonzo

Nadine Alonzo(he/she/they non-binary) is an active duty major promotable in the United States Army with 20 years of service. They participate in Defence Health Agency and Army Healthcare Operations policy discussions on transgender healthcare. Nadine is also a Doctor of Acupuncture, having practiced in North Carolina and New York.

Nadine is assigned to Army, Office of the Surgeon General with duty at Headquarters, Army G8 in the pentagon. They have also served as a Paratrooper in the 82d Airborne Division and Special Forces Command. Nadine has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. They commanded a medical company in Afghanistan in 2013, during the peak of operations.

Nadine came out while in command in 2013 after DOMA was overturned. They were one of the first out commanders in combat.

Nadine began their non-binary medical transition in 2022 after a DoD publication that acknowledged non-binary service members and endorsed transgender healthcare for them.

Nadine has been Married to their wife Kerstin for 7 years.

Alleria Stanley

Alleria Stanley is a 19-year active duty United States Army servicemember, advocate and member of the LGBTQ+ community, and a motivational speaker.

As a proud mother of five, she has faced many challenges in her life. During her military service, she had to relocate many times with and without her family. She also has taken the role of caregiver and widow, as her wife fought an ultimately losing battle with aggressive breast cancer.

As she transitions between various stages in her life, she recognizes how much the LGBTQ+ community has to offer the world in their transitions. Fundamentally, she believes that the world is more alike than different and how that is critically important to understanding one another.

Alleria looks forward to the days when society will achieve equity, equality, and access for all. Until then, she is continuously committed to ensuring that all challenges can be achieved together, one step and one day at a time.

MSG Nick Wright

Master Sergeant Nick Wright is currently assigned as a Recruiting and Retention Company NCOIC with the Ohio Army National Guard. He has served since 2007, and was lucky enough under President Obama to have been able to seek medical transition. Nick mobilized three times as a combat medic prior to entering full time status as a recruiter in 2013 - one for humanitarian relief during Hurricane Gustav (2008), once for Operation Iraqi Freedom (2009-2010) and once for Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan, 2012). He currently volunteers to work with the Future Warriors group assisting interested individuals seeking enlistment options.

Kristen Hughes

Kristen is a lesbian woman from coastal North Carolina. After attending Appalachian State University she served in the US Army as a 68W/Combat Medic. She is now the co-host of the podcast TopHatTopics which focuses on candidly discussing queer stories in pop-culture and is the Business Development Manager with PowerToFly.
